NOBRO at TFB’s Champagne Jam in Philly
NOBRO joined The Front Bottom's Champagne Jam on December 19 at The Fillmore Philadelphia (Brooklyn Bowl stage). NOBRO is an all female band from Canada and this was their last show on The Front Bottom's 10 Years of Back On Top Tour. The band brought skill, energy, and interactivity to the venue.
The band, dressed in all black was locked in for every moment, hyping up a pulsing crowd singing along to every word. The whole look and vibe of the band was very cohesive as if they were operating as one unit. The overall sound felt exactly like what I imagine hearing while playing a Tony Hawk video game or watching real skateboarders tear through concrete in real life. It was ambiance music for movement: fast, crunchy, relentless pacing, and a cowbell that pushed everything forward.
“Eat Slay Chardonnay” embodied this perfectly. Its repetition and speed encouraged physical release, almost rebellion. Catchy repetitive lyrics allow a crowd singing along to let go of overthinking and hold onto a mantra to sing along with the band. It allows them to have a release through the music.
"Better Each Day" gives a break in the set as the song begins with a track of voices singing together and repeating the words "I spent my whole life running away". The record carries the sounds heard of an organ and snapping or clapping along with the voices. As the intro fades it resolves to sing, "you know I think I kind of like it, like it better that way." The live band jumps in and creates a much faster pace for the song, speeding up what we just heard to create a layered experience.
They introduced their last song as a French one with "bon appetite mother fuckers"! The whole band was bent over their respective instruments, headbanging and feeling the music as they played “Bye Bye Baby”.
NOBRO created an interactive vibrant environment for a crowd that was into every second of it. While they finished up their set the crowd was chanting, “NOBRO! NOBRO NOBRO".
